George’s more honest life unfolds as a tale of unwavering faith and bravery. Born in Cappadocia in the late third century to Christian parents, he initially chose a path as a soldier, eventually earning favor with Emperor Diocletian, who promoted him to the rank of tribune. However, when Diocletian's ruthless persecution of Christians began, George took a bold stand. He openly and sternly rebuked the emperor for his cruelty and, as a result, resigned his commission.
What followed was a prolonged ordeal of torment, culminating in his beheading. St. George's resilience and cheerful defiance in the face of suffering struck a chord with Christians, who saw in him a symbol of unyielding Christian fortitude. St. Joan of Arc, a young peasant girl, exhibited exceptional military leadership during a time when France was in a state of turmoil. She claimed to have received divine guidance from the voices of saints, including St. Michael, who instructed her to support Charles VII in his bid for the French throne. Under her leadership, French forces experienced a series of significant victories against the English in the 100 Years War, most notably the lifting of the siege of Orleans in 1429. Joan’s military service as motivated by her faith and was an expression of it. Joan of Arc claimed that St. Michael, along with St. Catherine and St. Margaret, provided her with guidance and support. St. Michael, as the angelic warrior, was seen as a protector and a source of strength in her battles.
In France, Joan of Arc is celebrated as a national heroine. Her efforts played a significant role in securing French territorial integrity and sovereignty. She is often seen as a symbol of French patriotism and resistance against foreign domination, which resonates with the military's duty to protect and defend the nation.
St. Joan of Arc's extraordinary leadership, boldness, unwavering faith, and her historical role in the military make her a revered figure among service men and women and a fitting female patron saint of the military. Her legacy continues to inspire those who serve in armed forces around the world.
St. Adrian of Nicomedia and his wife Natalia, both initially pagans, found their lives intertwined with Christianity. Adrian, at the age of twenty-eight, held a prominent position as the head of the praetorium at the imperial court of Nicomedia, located in modern-day Turkey.
When tasked with overseeing the torture of a group of Christians, he was deeply moved by their unwavering faith and resolute endurance of suffering. Impressed, he asked them about their expectations from God, and they responded with the words of 1 Corinthians 2:9, expressing the unimaginable rewards awaiting those who love Him. This profound encounter led Adrian to publicly declare his faith, even before his own baptism, and he refused to carry out orders against Christians. As a result, he was imprisoned with them and subjected to severe tortures.
His connection to the military is not known other than the fact that he showed great courage in his martyrdom. St. Adrian was a prominent military saint in Northern Europe, especially in regions like northern France, Germany, and Flanders, and is often depicted wielding a sword.
St. John of Capistrano, with his education and theological training, blossomed into a brilliant preacher. His renown as a charismatic and influential orator rose so St. John embarked on journeys across Europe and Russia, addressing large assemblies and aiding in the establishment of Franciscan communities.
As St. John advanced well into his later years, reaching the age of seventy, the Holy Roman Empire confronted the formidable military might of the Ottoman Empire. The cities of Rome and Vienna faced imminent threats of siege. Consequently, Pope Callixtus III tasked St. John with kindling the interest of his captivated audiences in a crusade to thwart the invasion. Expanding his leadership beyond the realm of the church, John also assumed a prominent role in the defense of Belgrade, personally leading a contingent of 70,000 fighters who achieved a decisive victory in Belgrade in 1456. Tragically, John passed away a mere three months later.
Because of his evangelical witness and connection to military leadership, he is considered the Patron Saint of Military Chaplains.
Who better to protect and guide our military servicemen and women than their own personal Guardian Angel. In the realm of the military, we may occasionally overlook or question the existence of divine protection, but throughout the Bible, evidence of their presence abounds. Psalm 91:11-12 offers reassurance with the words, "For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go. With their hands they shall support you, lest you strike your foot against a stone." Similarly, Exodus 23:20 conveys the divine promise, "See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared." These verses underscore that just as God watches over us individually, so do these guardian angels, particularly significant for those in the military, where protection and guidance are often paramount. Our guardian angels are another manifestation of God's unwavering love and concern for our well-being, a comforting thought in times of military service.

Father, we ask you to place your hand of protection and peace on the families of those who have sent a loved one to serve in the Armed Forces. In their absence, give the families at home provision for their needs and strength to manage their homes alone.
