Lawrence

Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of the poor, deacons, school children, cooks and firefighters. Lawrence was a deacon living in Rome in the 3rd century and in charge of distributing the Catholic church's alms to the poor. Shortly after Pope Sixtus II was killed, he gave all of his money away and even sold some sacred vessels to give even more away. He told the Roman prefect he would show him the Church's wealth and instead brought him widows and orphans and the poor saying they were the treasure of the Church. This enraged the prefect who ordered him to be grilled to death. Legend has it it he told them after awhile that he was well done and should be turned over. His feast day is August 10th.
